Do LEVIA Sticks Contain Nicotine? What's Actually Inside

Tobacco-free doesn't mean nicotine-free. What a LEVIA stick is actually made of — the cellulose core, the nicotine, the Pearl capsule — plus flavors, device compatibility, and US carton pricing.

Short answer: yes, LEVIA sticks contain nicotine. What they don't contain is tobacco. Those are two different claims, and half the internet seems determined to blur them — you'll find US shop listings that flatly call LEVIA "nicotine-free," which the official spec contradicts. Here's what's actually inside a LEVIA stick, sourced from Philip Morris's own product documentation: the plant-based core, the nicotine, the Pearl capsule, the heating element — plus which devices run them and what the three US flavors taste like.

Tobacco-Free Is Not Nicotine-Free

PMI's own pages settle the question. The official IQOS UK site describes LEVIA as "a range of heated, flavoured nicotine sticks with zero tobacco," made from plant-based materials — "a proprietary blend of botanicals and cellulose — combined with nicotine." The IQOS Switzerland store titles its LEVIA category "Flavoured Nicotine Sticks." And the IQOS Italy FAQ adds the last piece: the nicotine in LEVIA is extracted from tobacco leaves.

So the accurate one-liner is: tobacco-free, not nicotine-free. A LEVIA stick is a plant-based cellulose core infused with nicotine that was derived from tobacco. The leaf stays out of the stick; the nicotine goes in.

The confusion is understandable. "Zero tobacco" is the headline on every LEVIA pack, and it's a short hop from "zero tobacco" to assuming "zero nicotine." But they are not the same claim, and if you're picking up LEVIA expecting a nicotine-free session, that's not what's in the box. Nicotine is addictive, whatever it's infused into.

What's Actually Inside a LEVIA Stick

Pull one apart (after the session, not before) and you'll find five distinct pieces of engineering.

The plant-based core

This is the part that replaces tobacco. Where a Terea stick carries a plug of processed tobacco leaf, LEVIA carries a substrate of cellulose and botanicals — plant fiber, essentially — infused with flavor compounds and nicotine. It's why LEVIA has no tobacco base note: there's no leaf in there to taste.

The nicotine

Extracted from tobacco leaves, purified, and infused into the plant core along with the flavoring. That's standard practice for most "tobacco-free" nicotine products: the molecule comes from the plant even when the plant material doesn't come along for the ride.

The SMARTCORE induction element

Same system as Terea: a small steel element is sealed inside each stick, and the Iluma heats it from within using a magnetic field. No blade and no flame — the core is heated rather than burned, and what comes out is a flavored aerosol instead of smoke. One LEVIA-specific detail: these sticks run at a lower heating temperature than Terea, which is exactly why PMI recommends a firmware update for the device (more on that below).

The Pearl capsule

All three LEVIA flavors sold in the US are Pearl sticks — a crushable capsule sits in the filter, and one firm click releases a second flavor mid-session. The click is one-way, so time it for when you actually want the switch. It's the same mechanic as Terea Pearl capsule sticks, just wrapped around fruit-and-menthol pairings instead of tobacco.

The freshness seal

LEVIA packs carry a peel-off freshness seal that Terea packs don't have. Small thing, but it's the quickest way to tell the two lines apart on a shelf — and worth knowing so you don't mistake the seal for tampering.

How That Differs From Terea

The one-paragraph version: Terea is real tobacco heated by induction; LEVIA is flavored plant fiber with nicotine, heated the same way. In the mouth, LEVIA runs lighter and brighter — the fruit and menthol do all the work, with no roasted base note underneath. Draw resistance and session length are about the same. If you're deciding between the two lines, we wrote a full LEVIA vs Terea breakdown with flavor-by-flavor recommendations.

Which Devices Run LEVIA

  • Works: every Iluma model — Iluma Prime, Iluma standard, Iluma One — plus the newer Iluma i series.
  • Recommended: update your device firmware through the IQOS app before your first LEVIA session. PMI recommends it so the device recognizes LEVIA's lower-temperature heating profile and runs the stick as intended.
  • Never: blade-generation IQOS devices (IQOS 3 DUO and older). LEVIA isn't just incompatible with the old blade system — per IQOS's own guidance, running LEVIA in a blade device can damage it. HEETS-era hardware and LEVIA do not mix.

The Three LEVIA Flavors Sold in the US

The US lineup is three Pearl SKUs, all at $115 per carton here — the same cartons commonly run $120 at other US shops.

Flavor Base profile Pearl capsule Carton of 200
LEVIA Zing Pearl Crisp lemon-lime citrus Icy peppermint burst $115
LEVIA Purple Pearl Sweet blueberry with a floral edge Cooling strawberry-berry burst $115
LEVIA Blush Pearl Sun-ripe strawberry Chilled watermelon burst $115

Tried LEVIA in Europe? Same sticks, different names

LEVIA launched in Europe first, and the flavor names didn't survive the trip across the Atlantic. Purple Pearl is sold in EU markets as Berry Pearl, Blush Pearl launched abroad as Summer Pearl, and Zing Pearl covers the same citrus-mint territory as the mint-forward EU SKUs like Island Beat. If a flavor you liked overseas seems missing from the US list, it's most likely here under a different name.

Buying LEVIA in the USA (21+)

PMI doesn't distribute LEVIA through official IQOS channels in the US, so it reaches American Iluma owners through independent retailers — which is what we are. The practical details:

  • Ships from inside the USA, 1–4 business days to your door
  • Sold by the carton: 200 sticks (10 packs of 20)
  • Free shipping over $299 — and on your first 3 orders regardless of total
  • Payment by Zelle, PayPal, or crypto, with 2% off crypto orders

The ordering flow is identical for Terea and LEVIA; the step-by-step buying guide walks through payment and delivery in detail.

We sell to adults 21 or older, full stop.

Can I use LEVIA in an IQOS 3 DUO or older?

No. Blade-generation devices can be damaged by LEVIA sticks. Iluma and Iluma i models only — with current firmware.

How many sticks are in a LEVIA carton?

200 — ten packs of twenty. All three US flavors are $115 per carton, with free shipping over $299 and on your first three orders.
